Key Findings:

  • Economic Sentiment is declining rapidly.
  • The Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) continued to decline sharply in September 2022 both in the EU and the Eurozone. The Employment Prospects Indicator (EEI) declined more moderately, strikingly above the long-term average.
  • Chemicals business confidence dropped further.
  • The Economic Uncertainty Indicator (EUI) rose markedly in September. Uncertainty increased across all business sectors; In particular, consumer uncertainty rose sharply and reached an all-time high.
  • Chemical production decreased while other manufacturing continued to increase.
  • Chemical production in the EU27 region decreased by 2.1% in the January-August 2022 period compared to the same period in 2021.
  • Oil and gas prices have fallen but still well above 2021 levels.
