The Waste Shipment Regulation (WSR), which restricts the export of waste generated in the European Union to third countries, was published in the EU Official Journal on April 30, 2024.

The content of the information note is summarized below.

Within the scope of the Regulation which entered into force on May 20, 2024,

- Provisions not related to waste exports

- Provisions on plastic waste export restrictions

- Provisions on the export of other types of waste other than plastics

will effectively enter into force on May 20, 2026, November 21, 2026, May 21, 2027 respectively.

These regulations aim to ensure that waste exports from the EU to third countries do not harm the environment and to establish a sustainable waste management system.
